The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA, has investigated various concepts of next generation reusable space transportation systems. Lifting-body re-entry vehicle is one of the most promising concepts among them. This type vehicle has no wings and derives its life solely from the shape of its body. Therefore it has the advantages of reduced structural weight, superior volumetric efficiency, and better characteristics against aerodynamic heating at hypersonic speed.
